Doctors
Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an
independent international relief organization that
delivers emergency medical aid to people affected by
armed conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion
from health care in nearly 60 countries. Their staff
and volunteers are known for their work in some of
the most remote and dangerous parts of the world.
In addition to providing direct medical care,
Doctors Without Borders also speaks out against the
causes of suffering and the obstacles to providing
effective assistance. In a wide range of
circumstances, volunteers have spoken out against
the violations of international humanitarian law
they have witnessed, in countries ranging from
Chechnya to Sudan.
Doctors Without Borders currently operates one of
its largest humanitarian relief operations in the
Darfur area, with 120 international staff and more
than 1,800 Sudanese staff distributed throughout an
area roughly the size of Texas. Because of the
ongoing violence, access to medical care and
emergency support is critically important in Darfur.
Doctors without Borders tries to address these needs
with general health care, nutritional assistance,
vaccinations and a mental health program for
survivors.
